Dr. Brown was recently promoted to Senior Instructor in the Biomedical Engineering Department. He enjoys teaching three undergraduate courses where he tries to give students a better understanding of normal and abnormal human physiology and the role that biomedical engineerers play in developing technologies that continue to impact modern medicine. Dr. Brown is also active in assisting undergraduate students who have a desire to attend medical school or other health related professional programs by utilizing his experience in industry, medicine and academia. Dr. Brown is able to counsel students how to best prepare their applications since he has had experience evaluating students for the last three years on FIU’s Medical School Admissions Committee.
Dr. Brown is a 1982 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he received his B.S. in Biology with High Honors. He has lived in Miami since 1971, following his father ‘s retirement from the U.S. Air Force after thirty years of service. His father was born in Miami in 1916 and his grandfather was one of Miami’s early physicians. Dr. Brown graduated from the University of Miami with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as an M.D. degree. He did post graduate work at UM and Bascom Palmer after which he worked in Clinical Trial implementation, monitoring and design consulting with companies such as Medtronic. He served as VP of Clinical Affairs and Chief Scientific Officer for Bioheart, Inc. where he ran clinical trials utilizing stem cells for repair of heart muscle damage following myocardial infarction.
Dr. Brown started teaching as an adjunct at FIU in 2003 and enjoyed it so much that was hired full time in 2005. He has been married to Judy Brown for 22 years and has two children, Katie 21 and Sean 16. Katie is finishing her Master’s degree in Interior Design at FIU and will graduate in 2012 while Sean attends Coral Reef High School in Miami, where he is a Sophomore.
