Engineering Center Facilities

The BME department has multiple labs maintained by individual professors, with applications including medical imaging, tissue engineering, microfluidics and mathematical modeling.  A more detailed descriptions of their labs can be found on their individual profiles or in the research section.  Another enticing element of FIU’s Engineering Center is its access to the Motorola Nanofabrication Research Facility, located onsite.  This is a separate facility that is a resource to BME. The $15 million Motorola Nanofabrication Research Facility is an integral part of the Advanced Materials Engineering Research Institute (AMERI), FIU’s broader materials research program.  This facility boasts:

  •  specialized equipment required to develop new and novel fabrication techniques unique to the creation of functional materials and devices that are no greater than 100 nanometers: (1,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair);
  • a full complement of standard semiconductor processing equipment to leverage the capabilities of robust and proven techniques; and
  • state-of-the-art analytical tools to study and characterize these nano-sized devices, as well as the materials and processes used to make them.

Modesto Maidique Facilities

FIU’s main campus is home to several new BME research laboratories in the Owa –Ewan, AHC-4 and VHC buildings. These state-of-the-art laboratories offer opportunities for conducting research in biophotonics, neural engineering and neuroscience. They include capabilities for optical imaging, neuroimaging, pre-clinical behavioral studies, cardiorespiratory studies, electrophysiology, optogenetics, histology and immunohistochemistry.
