Advising FAQs:

  • Advising orientation sessions are held once each semester before the start of the registration period. Attendance is strongly recommended for all students. Advising orientation dates are posted on the advising website and on the Department’s home page.
  • Transfer students must attend the transfer orientation at the time they become FIU students. Transfer students must meet with an advisor for academic planning and course equivalencies.
  • Declaration of major is encouraged as soon as possible for students to receive proper advising. To change your major to Biomedical Engineering please fill up the Change of Major form (see Forms link) and bring it to the BME Advising Office.
  • Advising Holds are placed on students files before the registration period starts this ensure communication between students and the advisor during class registration. The advising hold will be released once you have seen your advisor or have sent your Electronic Registration online and your advisor has approved it.
  • Registration Procedure can be done directly using PantherSoft once your Advising Hold has been removed. For more information on the registration procedure please check the “Registration Procedure” link below.
  • Advising appointments are available in 10-minute segments. You can make an appointment using the link posted below. Appointments should be made 24 hours in advance. During the Registration Period, the Associate Advisor offers open door advising. However, it is strongly recommended that you make an appointment in order to avoid long lines. The Associate advisor office hours are posted on the Advising Center door.

(1)  What is the mission of the BME Department?

The mission of the Biomedical Engineering Department is to bridge engineering, science and medicine

  • To educate and train the next diverse generation of biomedical engineers
  • To conduct research leading to significant discoveries in medical sciences
  • To conduct design and development of innovative medical technology
  • To translate scientific discovery and medical technology to industry or clinical practice
    for delivery of health care
  • To engage with the local to global community for knowledge dissemination

(2)  What sort of careers do our graduates go into?

50% of our graduates go to large medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers.  Another Approx. 25% go to small tissue engineering and medical innovation organizations and the other quarter go to medical school and graduate schools in engineering.

(4)  Are there any ways to indicate my progress in achieving my degree?

The panther degree audit is an excellent resource for displaying your progress towards your degree.  This can be accessed through the MyFIU website and is located on the home page on the right-hand side. In addition, the BME major map displays grades which indicate critical progress and satisfactory performance in selected science, mathematics and engineering courses.

Class Schedules

Current students can view the upcoming semester schedule online by logging into their MyFIU portal. Other individuals who wish to obtain the semester course schedule can visit http://my.fiu.edu and select “Class Schedule” under the Panther Links box. It is not necessary to log into MyFIU website to view the upcoming schedule.
