Dr. Joshua Hutcheson, BME Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director, has been working closely with Dr. Tom Nguyen, chief of the Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute at Baptist Health, to employ artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle cardiovascular health challenges and innovations.

These applications include using AI to find patterns in patient data to help diagnose cardiovascular disease earlier and closely follow those already diagnosed, and to predict post-operative complications in patients via bio-wearables.

“This partnership will leverage the expertise that FIU BME has on the technical and computational side with the hands-on experience and exposure on the clinical side,” said Dr. Nguyen. “This will ultimately allow us specifically as healthcare providers to be more efficient, accurate, and innovative with our healthcare delivery.”

This collaboration is an opportunity for Miami to become a strong technological, biomedical, and patient center to improve patient cardiovascular health outcomes in the state of Florida and beyond.

Dr. Christian Poellabauer, CEC Interim Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, has also helped in facilitating and nourishing this partnership between FIU BME and Baptist Health, while having a background in using AI in health as a Professor at the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences as well.

“There’s a need for having close collaborations between the College of Engineering and Baptist Health, with biomedical engineering at the forefront,” said Dr. Poellabauer.

These efforts will go hand-in-hand with innovations taking place at the Innovation Engineering Complex, where computer scientists and AI experts will be working together with biomedical engineers. “It would become the optimal space for collaborations and partnerships with outside communities like Baptist Health,” said Dr. Poellabauer.
