On Friday, Nov. 22, the BME Department hosted its third annual Diabetes Awareness Day event at MMC with support and sponsorship from StartUp FIU, the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM), Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences (NWCNHS), Population Health Initiative (PHI), and the Wallace H. Coulter (WHC) Foundation. The organizing committee was Dr. Anuradha Godavarty (BME), Dr. Sahar Ajabshir (HWCOM), Dr. Noël Barengo (HWCOM), and Dr. Pia Henfridsson from the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work (RSCPHSW).
Following welcome remarks from Dr. Andres Gil, Senior Vice President for Research and Economic Development and Dean of the University Graduate School, the event continued with Faculty Focus Talks moderated by Dr. Ajabshir and featuring Dr. Henfridsson, Dr. Barengo, Dr. Godavarty, and Dr. Mariana Sanchez from RSCPHSW. This was followed by poster presentations by undergraduate and graduate students, and post-docs/residents moderated by Dr. Godavarty, and a lunch reception featuring student exhibits moderated by Dr. Henfridsson.
The event’s keynote speaker was Dr. Teresa L.Z. Jones from the National Institutes of Health (NIDDK), who spoke about biomarkers for diabetic foot ulcers. Following the keynote talk, a panel discussion was held with Dr. Barengo as moderator, featuring Dr. Mariceli Comellas from NWCNHS, Dr. Sarah Stumbar from HWCOM, and Dr. Nadine Mikati and Dr. Rajiv Chowdhury from RSCPHSW. To end the evening, Dr. Barengo gave closing remarks thanking the event’s organizing committee and participants for their efforts in making this year’s event a success.
