Dr. Anamika Prasad, an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Florida International University (FIU), was awarded a grant of $497,108 from the Casey DeSantis Florida Cancer Innovation Fund. This grant is a testament to the extensive research and innovative approaches undertaken by Dr. Prasad and her team.

Dr. Prasad is at the forefront of developing innovative solutions for large bone defects caused by primary bone cancers. Joining FIU in 2022 gave Dr. Prasad new opportunities for collaboration with clinical partners and other colleagues to supercharge this pursuit.

Among her collaborators are Dr. Juan Pretell, the Chief of Orthopedic Oncology Surgery at Baptist Health and Clinical Professor of Orthopedics at FIU, along with Dr. Shekhar Bhansali, a Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at FIU. A notable aspect of their work is the development of 3D-printed scaffold designs tailored to individual patients and integrated with a drug delivery mechanism to improve faster recovery post-operation.

Looking ahead, Dr. Prasad and her team are committed to advancing this technology further. Their goal is to enable the implementation of these personalized bone defect solutions directly in a doctor’s office, providing on-demand and tailored treatments for fast recovery of patients with bone defects.
