Jacob McPherson, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded an Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Engineering Research Career Development Grant through the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health, under Award Number K12HD073945. The grant, entitled “Spinal stimulation for neuropathic pain,” will support foundational work characterizing the ability of targeted electrical stimulation of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves to modulate the sensitivity of a neural pathway believed to play a critical role in the development and persistence of neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury. The long-term goal of this research is to develop a closed-loop neuroprosthetic therapy for pain amelioration that seamlessly integrates with natural, ongoing neural activity and improves upon the limited, temporary relief offered by conventional therapies
