research interests

Sarah Erickson’s doctoral research at the Optical Imaging Laboratory is focused on breast tissue imaging using a novel hand-held optical imaging device.  Optical imaging using near-infrared light is a safe, non-ionizing, and non-invasive method for deep tissue imaging.  The unique features of the device include its flexibility to contour to different breast tissue geometries and self-coregistration facilities to enable 3D tomography.

The Optical Imaging Laboratory is currently working with Sylvester Cancer Center and an independent breast surgeon to test the device in breast cancer patients.  Preliminary studies have demonstrated the ability of the device to image invasive ductal carcinoma in human breast tissue using diffuse optical imaging (DOI).  Ongoing and future work will involve using the device to distinguish benign and malignant lesions and performing fluorescence-enhanced DOI using the fluorescent contrast agent indocyanine green.  The work is funded by a post-doctoral fellowship from the American Cancer Society and Canary Foundation.
