On September 29, 2017, the department of Biomedical Engineering at FIU hosted the Annual Undergraduate Research Day as part of the Wallace H. Coulter Biomedical Engineering Lecture Series. The event featured the research of many of the department’s outstanding undergraduate students. And also included lectures from speaker Philip Rosenfeld, professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Guest of Honor, Herbert Voigt, professor of biomedical engineering and an associate research professor at Boston University.

The undergraduate student poster presentation highlighted several outstanding research projects. Karla Montejo won first prize for her presentation on “A Low Cost, Portable Mueller Matrix Polarimeter for Low Resource Settings.” Second place was won by Nicole Sevilla for her presentation on “Measuring Retinal Temperature Changes Noninvasively Using a Laser Speckle Imaging System.”
The event also provided students and faculty the opportunity to meet with and learn from alumni of the department at a panel discussion, who are all heading toward becoming leaders in the industry.
Department chair, Ranu Jung, was impressed with our undergraduate students, “The confidence of the students and passion for research was very apparent in the one minute pitch the students gave. Outstanding effort!”
