On April 14th and 15th, FIU BME hosted the 9th Annual International Conference on Ethics in Biology, Engineering, and Medicine. The mission of the conference is to bring together biomedical engineers, scientists, clinicians, philosophers, lawyers, and entrepreneurs to engage in a dialogue about the ethical challenges that are posed during this period of technological advancement and scientific discovery. The work presented at the conference covered a broad range of topics reflecting the exciting and controversial nature of new advances in biology, engineering, and medicine.

“The 9th International Conference on Biology, Engineering, and Medicine was a great success, bringing together academics and practitioners in many countries with a diverse set of expertise to engage some of the most pressing ethical issues of our discipline”, says Dr. Zachary Danziger, Conference Co-Chair. “The debate touched on the ethics of globalization of research, social implications of biotechnology advancement, education, integrity, and application to the practice of medicine and biomedical research. The importance of privacy, respect, identity, and incentives were clear, as well as the need for the continued discussion of ethical problems and solutions in the culture of biology, engineering, and medicine.”

The conference was sponsored by FIU’s BME department, and was co-sponsored by the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, Sigma Xi- The Scientific Research Society, the Society on Social Implications of Technology, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering, Citi Program, and the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation Seminar Series.

Many people contributed to the success of this conference. We would like to thank the keynote speakers, invited speakers, poster presenters, session moderators, panel members, and staff. A special congratulation to Dr. Subrata Saha and Dr. Zachary Danziger for organizing this event to its great success!
