On Friday, February 15, our department hosted its second annual Heart Day. Heart Day is the capstone event of Miami Heart Month, also hosted by our department. During this event, we are bringing awareness to cardiovascular disease through the presentation of the Miami community’s research through lectures and poster presentations.

With the help of the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation Lecture Series, the department welcomed two keynote speakers to give lectures to the Miami community. We welcomed keynote speakers Anne Robertson (Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of Pittsburgh) and Marc Horner (Technical Lead, Healthcare at ANSYS, Inc.). In addition, we hosted a Q&A Panel Session with our keynote speakers, as well as Ryan Bobryk (Strategic Account Executive, ANSYS, Inc.) and Hooi Hooi Ng (Post-doctoral Associate, Cardiovascular Matrix Remodeling Lab, BME FIU).

Heart Day concluded with Chocolate with the Chair, an annual event hosted by the Biomedical Engineering Society, in which students and faculty were able to network with each other, as well as BME chair, Dr. Ranu Jung, in a casual environment.

We hope to continue the tradition of FIU’s Miami Heart Month, and continue the development to put an end to heart disease!
