Last month, BME graduate students Tananant Boonya-Ananta and Andres Rodriguez attended FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine’s (HWCOM) Community Health Fair. This student-led event was held to aid the residents of Miami’s underserved community, Little Haiti. During the service event, tables were set around Little Haiti Cultural Complex to provide physical check-ups that tested BP, Glucose, and BMI levels. Amongst the medical students that collaborated through FIU’s NeighborhoodHELP, other health professionals, such as soon-to-be physical therapists, nurses, and dentists came out to share awareness about healthy nutrition, proper walking gait, and dental hygiene. PATHS-UP fellows specifically helped in sharing with the youth the perks of studying science, especially when applied to health, by passing out pamphlets and speaking about our department’s bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate programs.
