Rice University in collaboration with the Polytechnic Institute of Technology and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre Malawi introduces a new program associate position in Biomedical Engineering. As part of a grant from the Lemelson Foundation, these institutions are joined in a partnership to strengthen biomedical engineering education in Malawi. to the program associate will support biomedical engineering education at the University of Malawi Polytechnic.
The program associate will reside at Blantyre, Malawi, where he/she will work at the University of Malawi Polytechnic to develop and implement undergraduate biomedical engineering design opportunities. They will oversee the establishment and daily function of a prototyping facility (design kitchen) for use in new Biomedical Engineering courses at the Polytechnic, as well as collaborate with faculty in the development of project- based learning courses. This person will be working closely with a technician in Malawi who will eventually lead the project.
The ideal candidate will have a BS or MS in electrical, biomedical or mechanical engineering with extensive prototyping and engineering design experience. He/She should have at least two years experience teaching or mentoring undergraduates in engineering and have significant device and instrumentation prototyping experience (specifically with technologies such as 3D printers, laser cutters, data acquisition equipment and other electronics). The candidate should have design project experience and the ability to employ design skills and tools in creative ways appropriate for low resource settings.
The program associate will receive a salary to support cost of living and medical benefits, assistance locating housing, and travel support. The fellowship start date is flexible, but ideally would be January, 2015.
