Team 3 presented: “C-Scope: A Polarized, Cost Effective, Portable Colposcope”. Winners posed with BME Chair, Dr. Ranu Jung, and BME Senior Instructor, Dr. Michael Christie.

On Friday, December 1st, 2017, undergraduate seniors in the department of BiomedicalEngineering presented their senior design projects to an audience of over 10,000 people (both in person, and live-streamed online). The senior design projects are a reflection of the students’ efforts and serves as their capstone undergraduate experience. This event symbolizes the culmination of a yearlong process in which the students planned, designed, and implemented ideas learned in the classroom to create new instruments to be used in the field of biomedical engineering. Students have brought recognition and awareness to the department, as well as the current issues at hand.

Team 1 presented: “System for Whole Field Fluorescent Microscopy Imaging In-Vitro”. Second place winners posed with judges Arvind Parsan, Jennifer Ardila, Ricardo Siu, and Chris Ross.

A total of seven teams, all of which were sponsored by a clinical organization in Florida, showcased their talents by each presenting their own original projects. We would like to congratulate Team 3 (Lorena Castañeda, John Hidalgo, Rayniel Perez, and Andres Rodriguez) for winning first place, and Team 1 (Asad Mirza, Juan Pinzon, Natalia Fuenzalida, Edwin Robledo) for winning second place. We would also like to congratulate Dr. Jessica Ramella-Roman who was the faculty advisor for Team 3. BME Chair, Dr. Ranu Jung states: “It appears to be the year for “optics” and in particular optical imaging for identifying cervical cancer in under resourced settings”. Dr. Ramella-Roman’s students not only placed first in Senior Design Expo, but her student also won an award at the Undergraduate Research Day regarding the same topic. We are very proud of all the participants and would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication to their studies, and to helping others. Another special thank you to our sponsors, judges, and mentors; we couldn’t have done it without you!
