This year’s Heart Day Symposium was a success! On Friday, Feb. 16, the Biomedical Engineering Department presented the seventh annual Heart Day Symposium at FIU. The event was an opportunity for students and faculty from around the country to have discussions on research and challenges being studied in cardiovascular medicine.

The day began with Dr. Kartik Balachandran from the University of Arkansas as keynote speaker presenting his seminar titled “Label-free Assessment of Early Calcific Aortic Valve Disease Progression – The Role of Altered Metabolism.” Afterwards, students and researchers had the opportunity to present their research regarding cardiovascular health and medicine during the poster symposium, which was followed by the Community Engagement Session with exhibits from FIU researchers and symposium sponsors. Exhibits were presented by Healthy Hearts, FIU-ICave, FIU Esports, FIU STAR Center, Student Dietetics Association, and Cardiacoustics.

To close the evening, select students presented more cardiovascular research during the event’s Flash Talks. The evening’s award winners were Michelle Wiese for Poster Presentation Runner-Up, Asad Mirza for Best Poster Presentation, and Alexi Switz for Best Oral Presentation.
