Applied Research Areas

Biomedical Engineering Specializations
The Department of Biomedical Engineering is changing people’s lives through translational research. Research conducted within the department is clustered into three major areas: Research in Tissue Engineering Model Systems, Diagnostic Bio-Imaging, and Sensor Systems, and Therapeutic and Reparative Neurotechnology. These three areas are served by technological advancements in bio-imaging and bio-signal processing, bioinstrumentation, biomaterials, bio-nanotechnology, biophotonics, cellular and tissue engineering, computational modeling, devices, and sensors, and neural engineering.

Research in Engineered Tissue Model Systems

Focus on cell and engineered tissue mechanics with application in cardiovascular regenerative medicine.
» Learn More

Diagnostic Bioimaging and Sensor Systems

Developing non-destructive optical and mechanical technologies that can detect disease development and tissue injuries in vivo.
» Learn More

Therapeutic and Reparative Neurotechnology

Focus on biologically inspired technologies to interface with the nervous system to repair and promote recovery of lost function after trauma or disease.
